title: Tools — Metronome description: Tap tempo, presets, torch sync, and BPM range.
Tools — Metronome
The standalone metronome, reachable from the Tools tab → segmented control → Metronome. For when you need a click track without any of the workout engine wrapped around it.
Layout
Big BPM number in the center
The current tempo, large digit, brand-orange. Tap-to-edit (numeric keypad) or drag the dial below.
BPM dial
Rotating dial around the number. Drag to change BPM smoothly. Resolution is 1 BPM.
Beat visualization
Below the BPM, four (or N) circles that pulse on each beat. Configurable: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/8, 7/8, free count.
Sound + visual + haptic toggles
Bottom row. Independent — turn off sound and use only the torch and wrist haptic for a silent metronome.
Big play/stop button
Centered above the toggles.
Tap tempo
Don't know the BPM you want? Tap the rhythm.
Tap the tap-tempo button at least 4 times
The bottom-left circular button labeled "TAP." 4 taps gives a usable estimate; 8 taps is precise.
The BPM updates after each tap
The display animates to the new value. You can keep tapping to refine, or stop when you're at the target.
Long-press TAP to reset
Clears the tap-tempo history. Useful if you want to start over.
Range
BPM range is 40–220. Below 40 the click feels like a clock; above 220 individual taps blur into a buzz. This range is enforced everywhere — the workout engine, the Tools metronome, and the Apple Watch all share it.
Sounds
| Sound | Vibe | Tier | | -------------- | --------------------------------- | ----- | | Classic | Wooden block, high/low alternation| Free | | Click | Tight digital click | Pro | | Stick | Drum-stick on rim | Pro | | Cowbell | Cowbell, single tone | Pro | | Hi-hat | Open hi-hat | Pro | | Tongue drum | Soft, melodic | Pro | | Ocean drum | Ambient, near-silent | Pro |
The high/low alternation (low pitch on beat 1, high on beat 2) is the default — turn off in ⋯ → Alternate pitch if you want identical tones on every beat.
Torch sync
The iPhone's LED flash pulses on the beat. Useful for:
- Headphones-on cadence work in noisy environments.
- Visual rhythm reference for hearing-impaired users.
- Dance / music practice in a darkened room.
Toggle in the bottom row of the metronome screen. Battery drain is noticeable past ~10 minutes; toggle off when you don't need it.
Wrist haptic
If your Apple Watch is paired and the watch app is installed, every beat fires a wrist tap. Same pulse pattern as the workout engine uses.
The watch can also originate metronome sessions from its own Tools screen — useful for phone-free practice.
Presets
Save BPM + sound + meter combinations:
- Classical practice — 90 BPM, 4/4, Click sound, no torch
- Run training — 180 BPM, 2/4, Classic, wrist haptic on
- Boxing combo — 130 BPM, 4/4, Cowbell, alternate pitch off
Long-press any saved preset to rename / delete. Built-in presets can't be deleted (just hidden).
Background behavior
Same as the Timer — sound + haptics + torch continue when the screen locks. The Live Activity displays the BPM and a small play/pause control.
